With the GOP set to take control of Congress and the White House, the party’s deficit and austerity hawks are positioned to make another attempt at their long-standing goal of “reforming” Social Security (SS) and Medicare and enact deep cuts to Americans’ promised benefits. Rather than resorting to bemoaning Republican hypocrisy, Democrats can go on offense by being honest and accurate with the American public:
The current insolvency crisis facing Social Security’s trust funds is entirely a political problem, not a financial one, and is resolvable without any change in promised benefits or tax policy.
